Siem Reap   |   Angkor Wat   |   Ta Phrom   |    Bayon   |   Angkor Thom  |   Old Market   |   Food

Next to the Angkor Wat, the Bayon temple is the other must see temple. The giant stone faces of Bayon have become one of the most recognizable images connected to classic Khmer art and architecture. There are 37 standing towers here. The bayon is located at the center of Angkor Thom area.

Bayon looks a bit flat for photographs near sunrise and sunset. So, do plan ahead and enjoy sweating it out.

BAYON

Located at the center of Angkor Thom..... The Bayon Temple is the most recognized image in Siem Reap next to Angkor Wat.

The temple was massive. We quickly climbed up and into the centre.

The bayon exhibition hut shows efforts by the Japanese government and UNESCO efforts in the retsoration works.

The large rocks were carved with images of buddha on its four sides...

Tho some carvings are disseapering, u can still see how detailed it was.

The entire temple was made from big square rocks that were carved.

Light and darkness.

It might appear small, but each tower was enormous.

Hav to admit that some turned out great.

The a statue of buddha sits at the east entrance.

The evening sun did indeed make the stones dull in photograph

The carvings looked so time consuming

:D

This face was facing west. The setting sun shone majestically on it.

It was a bit tricky taking pictures with a lot of shadows..

Some pictures were just so so...

Osman & Michael.

: )   : )   : )   :)

Osman

I thought this picture turned out great for mike.

A photo oppurtunity not to be missed.

The different colors of  the rocks made the mundane scene special.

Faces.

: )

See how big these faces are...

Had a great time taking the pics here

It was getting dark and pictures didnt turned out clear. We decided to head to Angkor Wat that day for sunset.
But we were back again here the next morning.

See how the bright lights helped out with the details in the picture :D

Today's task was to venture the exterior walls and outer side of the Bayon. U can see the carvings in this walls with great clarity.
the restoration project of the Bayon has been a success...

The doorway is around 10 feet tall.

Welcome to the Bayon, Cambodia..

Michael. (wearing a similar tshirt I was wearing the day before!!!)

This thin tshirt gave him an all over tan. I turned out to be a zebra.

Guessed i became a striped tiger, and not a zebra with the sun burnt on my hands.. ok ok .. back to the place.
Behind me is the restored library of the Bayon. Once destroyed, it has been rebuild back by UNESCO and Japanese trust funds

The walls were cleaned up nicely :D

But its still a long way to go to rebuild this entire place.

Mike figuring out what the carvings meant.
Having no tour guide was tough.

Can u spot the elephant?

I was just too busy taking photos of myself.. ..ha ha

Mental note... to have a nice, gloomy earth tone picture... wear brown when visiting Siem Reap to blend in with nature..
see how the carvings go on and on and on......................

But do wear thin clothing.... its hot there...

Carvings of Apsaras

Headless buddha statues..

Here is how the Bayon looked like from the south entrance...
